Compaq now `assembled in SA`

Johannesburg, 06 Mar 2002

Compaq Computer today announced the implementation of its local production initiative for the region which will, for the first time, see the local production of specific models in its Evo D300 range of desktop PCs.

Says Dave Reddy, director, Compaq Access Business Group: "With the new Evo D300v we are able to address segments of the market that are both price-sensitive and brand aware. In addition to a lower initial cost, the Evo D300v will offer quality in terms of construction using Intel technology, flexibility in configuration and entry-level enterprise compatibility which complies with the DMI specification, all of which is backed by Compaq`s global support infrastructure."

"The main targets for the Evo D300v are SMEs, government, parastatals and education and will compete head on with a number of local white box brands as well as Tier 1 brands from other global vendors. The locally produced Evo D300v will be available in two models - an Intel Celeron-based unit and Pentium IV-based unit running either Microsoft Windows XP Home or XP Professional, and will be manufactured by Ikwezi, our technology partner in the initiative. The units will feature 128MB SDRAM, 20GB and 40GB hard disks respectively, integrated 10/100 Ethernet network card, 3D graphics and integrated sound. A variety of off-the-shelf components can be added to suit specific customer requirements."

The PCs will be produced by Compaq`s initiative partner, Ikwezi, based in Sandton. Says Thozamile Botha, CEO of Ikwezi: "Ikwezi IT, a division of the Ikwezi Group, will handle the production side of the Compaq Evo D300v. As a strategic Compaq partner we were chosen for this initiative on our technical expertise and facilities as well as our strong empowerment strategy. As a black-owned and managed IT company we truly add a South African flavour to Compaq`s international brand and we foresee a long-term relationship between the companies."

Adds Reddy: "Compaq`s local production initiative has proved ideal for regions such as Southern Africa which require a lower cost, entry-level alternative and which have the facilities for local production. Poland is the only other country to deploy a similar initiative and we expect that in the short term, Compaq, and its local sales channel, will begin to benefit from it."
