Compaq in Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) today announced the launch of StorageWorks Modular SAN Array 1000 (MSA1000). The MSA1000 protects customers` existing investments in direct attached storage (DAS) while enabling them to migrate data on Compaq ProLiant and Smart Array servers to storage area network (SAN)-based systems in a cost-effective and easy-to-manage fashion.
"MSA1000 is the only product on the market today that provides easy and seamless data migration from DAS to SAN. With MSA1000 customers can migrate their DAS-based data to SANs without jeopardising their multivendor server architectures", said Kim Howlett, Business Unit Manager, Compaq Enterprise Storage Group.
"More and more customers want to implement SANs. However, many still have not moved forward because of concerns about complexity, total cost of ownership (TCO) and investment protection. The MSA1000 combines simplicity of SAN implementation with a low TCO."
The MSA1000 is part of the practical realisation of Compaq`s Enterprise Network Storage Architecture-2 (ENSA-2) vision: it is a building block and proof point. The solution supports enterprise storage technology needs in the entry-level and mid-range market for customers seeking to migrate their DAS data to SANs. The modular SAN Array 1000 is a scaleable, high performance storage solution.
Customers comment on MSA 1000
"Our company wanted the best of both worlds: a highly scalable SAN and an affordable system. The StorageWorks Modular SAN Array 1000 system gives us the scalability we need to match our growth at the best price/performance ratio on the market," said Rich Baldwin, president and CEO of Nth Generation.
Steve Driesens, enterprise solutions specialist at VL Systems, remarked: "We have wanted to implement a SAN for some time now, but it seemed excessively expensive. The StorageWorks Modular SAN Array 1000 allowed us to turn our existing direct attached storage into a SAN, by simply moving our drives into the MSA1000 with all data intact. We quickly consolidated our storage and achieved significant savings by leveraging the existing disks."
Based on Compaq`s ENSA-2 modular architecture, the MSA1000 SAN solution has been specifically designed for customers planning storage or server consolidation. It allows them to better use their overall storage resources. The MSA1000 is available now and shipping to customers. Commenting on Compaq`s market leadership in EMEA, Claus Egge, Program Director at IDC, said: "Compaq is estimated to be the leader of the 2001 disk storage systems market, based upon IDC`s recently released preliminary assessment of the 2001 disk storage systems market.
"The IDC report forecasts that Compaq will ship more than 320 000 disk storage systems in Western Europe in 2001 or 47% of all disk storage system units. Further, IDC forecasts that Compaq will supply 29% of the total storage system capacity purchased by Western European businesses in 2001. With revenue estimated at $1.59 billion in 2001, IDC also predicts that Compaq will be the number one vendor in European disk storage systems revenue."
