Comparex wins R70m Nampak deal

Packaging group Nampak has awarded Comparex Africa a three-year outsourcing contract worth R70 million.

Nampak is a manufacturer and marketer of packaging and tissue products, a paper merchant, recycler of packaging products and is a significant player in rigid plastics packaging in Europe.

The outsourcing deal includes centre, helpdesk, local area network and end-user services as well as several large-scale information and communications technology (ICT) projects for about 120 Nampak facilities across southern Africa.

Since shedding its European operations after a much-publicised boardroom coup last year, Comparex has been on a major expansion drive into Africa.

At the release of its interim results in February the group said financial results in the second half of the year were expected to exceed those of the first half, thanks in part to winning several new contracts.

Comparex says that in time, Nampak will expand the services to include international operations and the recently acquired Malbak.

According to the companies, the contract will play a major role in helping Nampak achieve its strategic ICT standardisation and centralisation objectives.

Peter Berthold, Comparex Africa`s business executive for Nampak, says Nampak went to tender for an ICT integrator that would be delivery-oriented, have a good cultural fit and a good track record.

"Our value proposition uniquely matched Nampak`s requirements because we made it our business to understand their requirements and their objectives in moving forward with their IT strategy."

The Comparex share was trading at 570c on the JSE this morning, down 5c from yesterday`s close.
