CompTIA provides support for Tangent

Johannesburg, 03 Dec 2002

Tangent Systems is an IT solutions provider that focuses on implementations of freely available technologies such as Linux, FreeBSD and OpenBSD as the platforms of choice for both the home and office environment, as well as consulting on platform-independent systems and services.

The innovative start-up became a member of CompTIA, the Computing Technology Industry Association, in September last year.

"We realised potential for these services and platforms in the business sector," explains Tangent Systems MD, Paul Brown. "So we created products and offer services ideally suited to meet the needs of the SME business to people wanting to learn more about these freely-available technologies. We focus specifically on Linux. Our services range from providing on-site implementations to customer specifications, to Linux training.

"We joined CompTIA because we felt the need to offer an internationally recognised Linux certification, Linux+ is the one certification that most conformed to our mindset."

Tangent does not issue Linux+ certification per se, but its two Linux training courses - one for beginners and an advanced one - stand candidates in good stead to obtain the certification from institutions where they can take the exam.

Brown feels that the speed, stability and price of freely available systems such as Linux and its associated software are attracting many companies to heterogeneous environments incorporating free technology. "This in turn creates job opportunities for individuals who have a working knowledge of such technologies, which is what we offer.

"CompTIA keeps us up to date with current training trends in the marketplace," Brown says. "Their weekly e-mail enables us to keep a finger on the pulse of what`s happening in the industry."
