Computer Faire 2000 scores WAP breakthrough

Johannesburg, 11 May 2000

An agreement struck between WAP-enabler, Tranxactive, and TML-Reed, organiser of Computer Faire, means the IT exhibition will be the first public event in SA to make relevant content available to users of WAP-enabled cellphones.

Computer Faire visitors will be able to query the Computer Faire Web site for details pertaining to specific exhibitor stand locations, search through products by category or find general vendor information by dialling into W@P Home (www.waphome.co.za), a WAP server which will translate much of the information on the Computer Faire Web site (www.cfaire.co.za) into the WAP format for easy viewing on the relatively small screen of WAP-enabled cellphones.

Computer Faire`s GM Celeste Abroms believes Tranxactive`s WAP service brings a new dimension to the faire. "The message of this year`s exhibition is very much on the IT that`s changing the way we work and live, and WAP is the perfect example of such a technology. The fact that Computer Faire itself will be WAP-enabled is far better than confining a WAP demonstration to a booth or two. This way any visitor with a WAP phone can experience the technology first-hand."

The event will take place at Gallagher Estate, Midrand, from 24 to 27 May.
