Computer Society South Africa's Annual General Meeting was held on Tuesday 20 July 2010 at the Softline Auditorium, in Gallo Manor, Johannesburg.
As part of the AGM proceedings, Wellington Matope (Standard Bank) and John Maphephe (independent ICT consultant) were elected to the Executive Council of the Society, and Adrian Schofield (Johannesburg Centre for Software Engineering), Clive Fagan (Number Portability Company), Gail Sturgess (TalentAlign), and Harvey Keown (Africa Foundation) were re-elected to the Council.
The Executive Council of Computer Society South Africa (CSSA) has subsequently elected its new Office Bearers for 2010/2011, with Adrian Schofield of the Johannesburg Centre for Software Engineering being re-elected as President, and Rabelani Dagada (University of the Witwatersrand) and Moira de Roche (Laragh Skills) being elected as the CSSA's new Vice-Presidents.
Colin Thakur (Durban University of Technology) takes over the role of Honorary Treasurer from Peter Waker, who has stepped down due to other commitments. Peter Waker will remain on as a Director and both Rabelani and Colin also now join the Society's Board of Directors.
Members attending the AGM were privileged to hear a fascinating presentation from guest speaker Ivan Epstein. Ivan, who is the CEO of Softline and the current CSSA/ITWeb IT Personality of the Year, gave a thought-provoking talk on entrepreneurship in the South African context. Basing his talk on his own experiences, with the founding and growth of Softline in South Africa, he enumerated both the challenges and the rewards for entrepreneurs who are really passionate about their businesses.
Adrian Schofield (CSSA President) highlighted the Society's continued commitment to the development of professionalism among ICT practitioners in South Africa and discussed the CSSA's drive to receive accreditation from the International Professional Practice Partnership (IP3) (an initiative of the International Federation for Information Processing (IFIP)), as well as its involvement with the Reference Group of the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA), which is working on the recognition of professional bodies and the registration of professional designations. Both the IP3 and SAQA initiatives will add value to the professional members of Computer Society South Africa, and indeed professional ICT practice in the country.
