It appears 11 computers were stolen from the University of the Witwatersrand`s Faculty of Health Sciences during a break-in last night, says a university spokesman.

While an investigation is still under way to determine what exactly was taken, head of Wits Campus Control Rob Kemp says the computers appear to have been the workstations of staff members in the offices of the faculty building.

Kemp says the value of the stolen equipment is not known at this stage, and it is also not known whether anything else had been stolen.

It appears the thieves gained entry onto the Braamfontein campus by cutting through a palisade fence. However, Kemp was unable to confirm reports that cameras may have been turned to point away from where the break-in occurred to avoid capturing the incident on tape.

"The will inconvenience the faculty at this stage, but contingency plans are in place to replace the computers immediately," he says.

No arrests have been made and Hillbrow police and campus control are investigating.
