Compuware announces new release of DevPartner Java Edition 3.3

Johannesburg, 25 Jan 2005

Today, heroic efforts are required of Java developers and testers to deliver quality applications faster. The complexity of Java technology is overwhelming to many newcomers in the Java community, even those experienced with multi-tier development.

This complexity, lack of experience and lack of training are primary reasons why development projects can experience significant delays and applications can be delivered with serious failures.

These multi-tier applications combine many different, complex technologies and are prone to problems with runtime performance, memory utilisation and multi-threading.

DevPartner Java Edition 3.3 helps developers resolve these problems quickly and easily, by providing support in three key areas:

- Pinpointing memory problems.
- Evaluating code performance at the line and method level.
- Evaluating code coverage and volatility.

This information can be collected across all tiers of a Java application and delivered through a Web browser. This allows developers to access their results quickly and measure progress consistently from everywhere, home or on the road. For example, they could run a test in the lab, controlling it and viewing results from the desktop in their office.

Consistent use of DevPartner Java Edition also aids team leaders and managers in understanding how long-term trends are affecting development and how well internal development processes work.

Release 3.3 of DevPartner Java Edition introduces many new features including:

* Transaction breakdown which enables identification of systematic performance problems in different modules of an application. For each transaction, the time spent in Servlet/JSP, EJB, JDBC or JMS will be provided. This feature enables developers to define custom categories and find out how each module of an application contribute to the response time.

* Object retention analysis enables developers to automatically uncover objects that stay in memory for a long time without being used. This will make memory leak analysis a repeatable process.

* Session comparison which enables comparison of two different DevPartner Java sessions. Developers can measure the impact of a code change on performance and code coverage levels.

Added support for this release includes JDK 5.0, Jrockit 8.1, Jboss 3.2 and 4.0, Oracle JDeveloper 10g, Sun Java System 8, IBM RAC and Eclipse 3.0.
