Comverse has announced that its portfolio of solutions and services can run on any network, including GSM, CDMA, TDMA and now WiFi.
The company used the International Telecoms Union conference in Geneva recently to demonstrate its WiFi-readiness, says Stuart Eveleigh, MD of Comverse SA, the subsidiary of the Nasdaq-listed Comverse group.
He says no WiFi services have been sold yet in SA, but Comverse is speaking to the network operators.
Benny Einhorn, Comverse chief marketing officer, says one such service, push-to-show, features video content in a walkie-talkie-type scenario, meaning direct video connection between individuals "without dial-tones".
MMS composition, transmission and reception over WiFi for IP terminals show how enhanced, network-aware MMS clients instruct the server to send a richer MMS message, enabling superior multimedia and video quality.
VVM over WiFi provides an e-mail-like experience with easy message management (listen, delete, forward, reply), enabling the user to view message headers (name, time, length) and enhancing messaging and infotainment services.
Prepaid services will support WiFi through a prepaid server enabling real-time rating, converged billing and account information that can be used to enhance performance and usage of third-party services. Comverse also offers postpaid billing models.
According to Einhorn: "Comverse WiFi solutions are `network-aware`, and provide seamless roaming and service continuity between wireless, wireline and WiFi networks. Users enjoy the freedom to communicate in the most appropriate and convenient way at any given time."
With Comverse WiFi solutions, carriers can leverage wireless or wireline network-based services to the WiFi space to provide subscribers with next-generation applications.
