Comverse introduces e-mail management via cellphone

Johannesburg, 06 Sep 2001

People around the world have become increasingly dependent on the Internet, especially e-mail, as a cost-effective and efficient means of communication. The next step is to bring this technology to the cellphone in a clear and easy to use format.

In line with this, a fully manageable mobile solution called Mobile eMail, that enables subscribers to create, forward and reply to e-mail messages using only their cellular phone, is now available to cellphone operators.

Innovators of the technology, Comverse MD Stuart Eveleigh says Mobile eMail will allow subscribers to conveniently forward and reply to email messages and include the entire text of the original message.

The service utilises MOSM (mobile originated short message) and WAP technologies to communicate with many types of wireless handsets, personal digital assistants (PDAs), two-way paging devices and PCs.

Mobile eMail leverages innovative voice features such as e-mail-to-speech and voice-reply to e-mail via the handset. E-mail-to-speech offers subscribers the option of using any fixed-line or mobile handset to dial into their mailbox to listen to their e-mail and the ability to save, delete and forward messages. Using voice-reply-to-e-mail, subscribers can also record a voice message as a reply to an e-mail message, which is then sent as a normal e-mail.

"Via their mobile handsets, subscribers can see and manage their current profile information and receive notification of new e-mail messages. Mobile eMail is built on Comverse`s messaging platform and architecture, and will leverage 3G technologies as they become available," notes Eveleigh.
