Comverse introduces prepaid GPRS, a real-time prepaid solution for wireless data services

Johannesburg, 22 Jun 2001

Supplier of cellular added value software services, Comverse, has announced the introduction of Prepaid General Packet Radio Services (GPRS).

Comverse`s Prepaid GPRS is a real-time billing and payment solution for providing prepaid mobile users with easy, on-line access to IP network applications including Internet and corporate Intranet access, email, location-based information services, mobile commerce and infotainment services.

"Building on Comverse`s success with mobile data and prepaid services, Comverse`s Prepaid GPRS is a scaleable, flexible, feature-rich solution that lets service providers meet the data needs of their prepaid subscribers, now and in the future," explained Comverse (SA) MD Stuart Eveleigh.

Prepaid GPRS is a combination of Comverse`s Mega.Flow carrier-class mobile Internet platform and Comverse`s prepaid server, which allows operators to deploy a variety of service features based on a sophisticated array of advanced charging options.

The options include calendar trafficking, periodic charging, volume-based billing, and service- and location-based billing. Comverse`s Prepaid GPRS solution lets subscribers use a prepaid account balance to pay in real-time only for what they use.

"Prepaid services constitute an important part of the global mobile market," said Eveleigh. "Providing Prepaid GPRS is an important step in Comverse`s efforts to help service providers leverage their infrastructure investments and further expand their market and subscriber base with the seamless deployment of 3rd Generation network (3G) wireless revenue-enhancing multimedia applications and services."

Prepaid mobile services have grown significantly in the last 12 months, particularly in Western Europe where an overwhelming proportion of all new mobile subscriptions have been prepaid - up to 93 percent in some countries. Telecom consultancy Strategy Analytics forecasts continued strong growth of prepaid services in Western Europe, estimating that 75 percent of all mobile subscriptions will be prepaid by 2005.
