Consumers ditch PCs for tablets
Citing convenience as the number one factor, US consumers are gobbling up the tablet devices in droves - much to the detriment of PC retailers who have always contended that the tablets are not a replacement for PCs
According to a recent Nielsen survey, among those who own both a tablet and a desktop, 35% said they use the desktop “less often or not at all.” The usage drop was not limited to PCs as laptop (32%), e-reader (27%), and portable game console (25%) users reported a similar change in habits.
Thirty percent of consumers who own a laptop and a tablet indicated that they were more likely to favour their tablet over their laptop, says The Independent.
An additional 2% of respondents said they had stopped using their laptop all together since purchasing the tablet device.
Tablet ownership has had an impact on e-reader use too, said Nielsen. Some 27% of e-reader owners who also had a tablet used their e-reader less often or not at all.
Meanwhile, InformationWeek reveals that the Nielsen reports indicates that the Apple iPad has 82% of the tablet market in the US, with 43% owning the Wi-Fi version and 39% owning the Wi-Fi + 3G version.
The rest of the field - Motorola Xoom, Samsung Galaxy, and others - combined take a meagre 18% of the tablet market.
