Controlware successfully completes Compaq interoperability testing for Lastmile Wavepilot

Johannesburg, 07 Feb 2002

Controlware GmbH, based in Dietzenbach, Germany and a leading global provider of LastMile optical networking solutions, today announced that Compaq Computer Corporation has completed interoperability testing of the LastMile WavePilot Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexer (DWDM) with its SANworks Data Replication Manager (DRM).

The WavePilot extends storage area network (SAN) environments for DRM by increasing reliability and manageability of physical fibre connections. DRM is value-added software for StorageWorks RA8000/ESA12000 and MA8000/EMA12000 storage solutions. DRM enables customers to replicate data online from local to remote StorageWorks systems over switched Fibre Channel fabrics.

"Storage requirements are skyrocketing and corporations rely on accessing a magnitude of information quickly, reliably and easily, which makes optical network access for SANs very popular," stated Wiebe de Vries, International Sales and Marketing Director for Controlware GmbH.

"The successful completion of Compaq interoperability testing adds a worldwide solution to the SAN market by allowing enterprises to grow their SANs in a direction that can enhance and maximise operation of storage devices in various locations."

Considering the high-volume of data created daily, it`s no surprise that enterprises worldwide are concerned with business continuity. Successful companies understand the value of protecting and accessing their data quickly and easily. The WavePilot platform encompasses a unique design that cost-effectively enhances the capacity of new and existing fibre connections incorporating DWDM. Multiple applications are able to share the same physical fibre path while transparency through bit rate and protocol independence enables transportation of a wide range of applications.

"The WavePilot complements Compaq`s SANworks Data Replication Manager by providing a solution that is not only cost-effective, but also can be implemented in less than an hour, immediately improving the reliability and performance of the connection," said Mark Sorenson, Vice President, Compaq Storage Software and Solutions Division.

"The interoperability testing included protocol application and distance testing up to 100 kilometres, with results that showed that the WavePilot was passing light within seconds of installation."

Coupled by the diminutive size of the WavePilot and the user-friendly SEEMiles software the LastMile products are true plug and play devices. The WavePilot is less than 7-inches in height, so IT managers can easily place one or more units into a 19-inch computer rack, allowing for maximum application requirements whilst saving precious and expensive space. Many of the WavePilot features are supported via a microprocessor and managed easily with LastMile`s management software SEEMiles. SEEMiles can be used to monitor operation, backup status, backup activation, operate channel test loops, inventory control, port and system status, error statistics, inventory management, loop control, software download and trap generation.

"IT managers want to add value to their networks by including scalable, reliable and easy to manage solutions that will accommodate future storage demands. Another primary concern of enterprises today is the prevention of data loss and ensuring business continuity," says De Vries. "The combination of Compaq`s data replication and LastMile`s optical access delivers innovative solutions to meet these requirements. By partnering with Compaq, we are able to offer affordable access with the highest performance to customers around the world."
