The Congress of SA Trade Unions (Cosatu) has taken to social media site Mxit to enhance communication with its members.

The page is aimed at ensuring members receive notices of all the key activities that take place within Cosatu. The site will also highlight important meetings and campaigns that Cosatu members must be involved in.

"It also provides updates on the various and positions that Cosatu takes from time to time. It is further designed for members to report any difficulties or complaints that they may have about unions, in respect of servicing them," says Cosatu in a statement.

The trade union federation says using Mxit serves as an additional channel for Cosatu to improve services to its members and ensure it's able to respond to the social injury of workers, working families and the working class.

"The issues would range from training, job opportunities and workers' rights, to social issues such as housing, healthcare, gangs and drug-related problems," it adds.

The page also has a link to the Department of Labour, polls, photographs, as well as information on voting. Cosatu members can access the Mxit page from a PC or WAP-enabled mobile phone.

Social campaigning

Last month, the African National Congress (ANC) in the Western Cape launched an app on Mxit, in an effort to attract voters in the province. The MyANCWC app is aimed at voters and mobilising them to vote.

ANC Western Cape chairman Marius Fransman said in a statement the party aims to focus on the youth and, therefore, chose a platform used mainly by the youth to be able to engage with them directly.

The app allows users to learn more about the ANC, get more information about voting and how to register, and check whether they are registered.

Users can also engage with the ANC on issues that concern them. According to Fransman, the site will be monitored so that issues raised are followed up by ANC representatives.
