Crossroads unveils dramatic improvement in business productivity using ARCserve 2000 Serverless Backup from Computer Associates

Johannesburg, 03 Nov 2000

Crossroads Systems Inc, a US-based developer and manufacturer of storage routers for Storage Area Networks (SANs), has demonstrated a 50% increase in performance after implementing the ARCserve 2000 Serverless Backup Option from Computer Associates International, Inc.

In test environments, Crossroads` 4250 and 4450 storage routers showed significantly faster throughput rates and improved server efficiency. "Information Technology (IT) administrators are constantly plagued by long backup intervals that keep servers tied up," said Larry Sanders, president and COO of Crossroads Systems. "Using Copy Manager on our storage routers to move data liberates the servers in the SAN environment to run the mission-critical applications required to keep today`s 24x7 businesses on line with improved productivity."

Typically, in networks where the server is in the data path, the central processing units (CPUs) dedicate 35-50% of capacity to the backup process. In August, when the exact configuration and Windows NT environment were duplicated using serverless backup, total CPU utilization was measured at a mere 3-5%.

Using this technology reduces traffic congestion within the SAN, provides higher throughput, and leverages SAN investments by maximizing server resources and decreasing the backup cycles.

As one of Crossroads` primary OEMs, StorageTek will offer a serverless backup data mover option to their customer base. "Crossroads has established a strong reputation as the interoperability leader with continued dedication to providing tested and verified solutions," said Mike Booth, vice president and general manager of StorageTek`s Minnesota research and development centre. "With the addition of the serverless backup application, StorageTek is confident in providing customers a solution that maximizes existing resources and delivers significantly improved performance."

"It`s no secret that a variety of factors - including data-intensive back-office applications, growing eBusiness activity, and rich Web content - are forcing companies to manage massive amounts of critical data," said Phil Goodwin, CA brand manager, storage solutions. "Fast performance is essential for coping with these ever-increasing storage and backup requirements, and we`re pleased at the key role ARCserve 2000 is playing in delivering that performance to our clients in conjunction with solutions from such as Crossroads and StorageTek."

Crossroads 4250 and 4450 storage routers were the first to market with CA`s ARCserve 2000 with serverless backup option and are committed to future testing and development of this revolutionary application.
