Around 25 000 people gathered at Nokia`s Totally Board event held yesterday at Bloubergstrand, Cape Town to watch skateboarders, BMXers, snow boarders and kiteboarders demonstrate their skills and listen to the likes of Tweak and one80.
The event was first launched in Warsaw, Poland in 1999 and this year is the first time the event was held on the African continent.
Lindi Lesolang, media liaison for Nokia`s Soufh African distributor RF Group, says a huge 90 metre long ramp covered in 200 tons of snow fielded the snowboard and ski competitions, with a skateboarding competition being held at the skatepark and at the waterfront.
"We had athletes from Germany, Finland, USA, the Czech Republic, France and Japan competing at the event, as well as demonstrations by BMXers, inline skaters and kiteboarders."
Lesolang says the event also showcased Nokia`s 3100, 3200, 3300 phones and an NGage tent where members of the public queued for the chance to play on the gaming console.
"Nokia staff and users with MMS-enabled phones [Multimedia Messaging Service] displayed photographs of the crowd taken with their phones on a big screen at the event, which also showed Brasse Vannie Kaap, One80 and Tweak as they performed for the crowd," she says.
