CSSI supports storage standards

Johannesburg, 08 Nov 2004

CSSI Africa has the technological key to all tape drive and backup system servicing and certification.

Computer Storage Services Africa is the only company within the African continent to have the full manufacturing technological suite for all DLT, DAT and LTO devices.

DLT Storage Technology remains the most widely used backup device today, around the globe. Corporations within SA now have the opportunity of implementing cost-cutting initiatives by restoring their "end-of-life" DLT tape devices into a re-manufactured state, and further preserving an organisation`s IT investment for up to an additional 12-month period with extended warranties.

"Our technology is propriety and further developed in-house, in some cases with permission from the manufacturers. This allows us not only to restore drives to an `almost-new` condition, but CSSI Africa can also recover data from faulty or defective media that cannot be restored when required," explains James Grcic, Managing Director of CSSI Africa.

"Other additional features on the technology include the use of oscilloscopes and head, data and trace analysers. These are also utilised for head re-alignment that results from head and tape guide de-alignment over time, and in turn causing the inability to restore the data on the backup devices," Grcic adds.

As data storage is growing exponentially, CSSI Africa has a unique service offering. Companies are offered rebates on their retired or end-of-life storage devices. CSSI will also match or beat any quote on all NEW storage device purchases. These savings can result in significant IT cost reduction for any IT department, SME organisation and even larger corporate.

"Tape drives should be serviced at least once every 12 to 18 months," says Melinda Maich, Marketing Manager of CSSI Africa. "Your company`s life and data are stored on these backup tapes. Over time, head degradation and de-alignment takes place on the backup drives. Further, evidence has shown that some internal components can magnetise causing risk to your data integrity," Maich adds.

Often when a restore is needed, panic sets in because no one can explain why the data that is supposed to be on the media, is no longer restorable or capable of being read. CSSI performs three to five media recoveries weekly due to the above facts, and these are not small organisations.

"Due to the amount of storage occurring today, media and tape drives are experiencing heavy duty cycles. The degaussing of media is also recommended to re-align the magnetic/metallic particles. This will assist in greater drive performance, less horse-shoe effect and longer media and drive life," explains Maich.

"CSSI Africa offers a free degaussing service on media when drives are sent in for servicing or repair. Alternatively, a request can be made to quote on the amount of data customers wish to have certified and degaussed, or for a request to clean and wipe all data from media."

CSSI Africa provides extended warranties on all tape drive devices available in SA. The company is also a leading supplier and advisory on backup devices, storage implementation and consulting. Distributors and established organisations are welcome to contact CSSI directly.
