The CEO of the Commonwealth Telecommunications Organisation (CTO), Dr Ekwow Spio-Garbrah, intends to step down as CEO of the organisation in 2011 and says he will not seek another four-year mandate.

Spio-Garbrah was appointed to the post in 2003 after a global search to which some 100 ICT experts responded. According to the organisation, he is the first African to have headed the CTO since its inception in 1901.

Although he is eligible under the CTO's constitution to be re-appointed to another term, he says he has decided to forgo another four-year mandate in order to devote time to God, family, other business interests and politics in his home country, Ghana. He is currently a vice-chairman of Ghana's ruling NDC party.

The CTO says although a number of delegations from member countries wished for Spio-Garbrah to reconsider his decision or to explain his motives further, the CEO held to his position that it was time for the organisation to begin the search for his replacement.

Spio-Garbrah has agreed to make himself available to offer any newly-appointed CEO advisory support as necessary, to aid in conducting their duties effectively, the CTO says.

The CTO council has instructed its executive committee to begin the recruitment process for Spio-Garbrah's replacement.
