Gauteng parents who have yet to complete online applications for their children for the 2017 academic year have until midnight tonight to do so.
This is the final notice issued by the Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) to remind parents and guardians of pupils going to grade one and eight next year to register their children using the online learner application Web site.
The GDE also urged parents who do not have access to the Internet to visit their nearest school or district office for assistance.
Those parents still experiencing challenges with the online applications can contact the GDE's call centre on (011) 355 0000 or the toll free number 0800 000 789, says the department.
To minimise long queues during the registration period, the department sought to make learner registration tech-savvy and introduced its online registration site so that parents can apply for space for the 2017 academic year.
The department encouraged parents to make use of the Web site to register children. Despite a rocky start in April, the GDE says it has received and processed over 673 911 online learner applications.
Despite the system mainly targeting grade one and eight applicants, the department says it also recorded about 17 167 applications for learners between the grades two and seven.
A statement notes: "The department would like to extend a special gratitude to parents who have thus far heeded our call to register online and for affirming their confidence in the system. Their show of confidence has been a great source of inspiration to the department to continue to work hard to provide modernised systems that allow us to provide quality basic education for all."
The placement of learners will take place from 24 June until 25 July. During this period, schools will process learner placement online. Parents will receive an automated SMS indicating offer of placement. Letters will also be sent to parents informing them of successful and unsuccessful applications, according to the GDE.
