Gauteng education has urged parents to accept the online school placement offer for their children or risk losing the offer.

Today marks the last day for parents to accept school placement offers for their children, or losing the offers to other parents who are on the waiting list, says the Gauteng Department of Education.

In April, the department introduced its online learner admissions Web site that required parents of leaners entering grade one and eight in 2017 to use the portal for school placement.

Motivated by a need to minimise long queues during school registration time, the department moved to make its school application process more tech-savvy.

However, it appears the placement process for those online applications has hit a snag as some parents are yet to accept the offers.

"To date, 51 200 parents still have to confirm their offers of placement. This delay on the part of the parents is clogging up the system, making it difficult for the department to place all learners that have applied," says the department in a statement.

Despite this, the department has tried to allay parents' fears and says all the applicants will be placed.

"The placement of learners is on track. Districts are currently facilitating the placement of applicants that have applied between 19 April and 1 June.

"Parents are advised to visit their respective district offices, where they will receive the necessary assistance."

The department has also invited parents in Ekurhuleni to the Ekurhuleni regional open day on 5 November between 9:00 and 16:00, when they will be assisted with their online applications.

Parents can also call (011) 355-0639 or (011) 843-6796 for enquiries.
