JSE-listed Datacentrix has installed 15 IBM file servers and Microsoft software for the SA Reserve Bank in a deal worth over R1.5 m.
Johannesburg, 12 May 1999

SA Reserve Bank Senior Manager Information Technology, Koos Risseeuw, explains that this is an upgrade, with more powerful machines replacing older technology. The benefit, is that as business applications dictate more powerful technology, the SA Reserve Bank will be positioned to handle all short to medium forthcoming applications and business processes. "We have implemented this to position ourselves for future business driven applications, it is part of our annual capacity planning. Datacentrix is helping us to meet our I.T. needs," he says.

Risseeuw says that the new servers are used for all the branches including Cape Town, Durban, Port Elizabeth, East London, Bloemfontein, Pretoria north and Johannesburg. There is also a training institute in the Pretoria area. "We have eight centres including training," he adds.

At the branches the bank is running business driven applications including Corel 8 and Microsoft products. "There are also communications applications for connectivity to head office, as well as Internet and Intranet facilities.

The mission of the network division at the bank, of which server technologies is a subset, is to provide and maintain networking technologies for the enablement of effective business processes.

"We aim to develop and provide standard procedures to ensure that user applications are certified and do not impact negatively on the network; to keep abreast of modern technology; to utilise technology to improve the effectiveness of infrastructure management systems and to maintain acceptable response times.

"Our main function is to support the mission statement in providing continual networking facilities by the development and deployment of networking architectures, supported by procurement, project coordination and maintenance functions. This approach ensures a stable and reliable networking environment," says Risseeuw.

The SA Reserve Bank chose Datacentrix because it views the computer company as a very good business partner. "We rely on their consultation, skills, support as well as after sales support," says Risseeuw.

In conclusion, Risseeuw notes the deal fits in with the SA Reserve Bank`s short term, medium and long term planning for server architecture. "We are executing our strategies in line with our vision."
