Dimension Data`s 51%-owned Asian subsidiary, Datacraft Asia, has won a $12 million contract to construct a complex, high-speed Internet protocol (IP) network across the Indonesian archipelago.
The contract with PT Telekomunikasi Indonesia will see Datacraft Asia working closely with Cisco Systems to design and deliver the network, due for completion by July.
The backbone expansion is an integral part of a new infrastructure to support five business areas on which the Indonesian telecom giant is focusing: Telkom-Phone, Telkom-Mobile, Telkom-View (cable TV operations), Telkom-Internet and Telkom-Service (infrastructure leasing operations).
Adeng Achmad, Telkom`s head of the multimedia division, says the telecom company chose Datacraft Asia because of a proven track record. Among other things, the company implemented Indonesia`s national voice-over-IP (VOIP) network last year.
Running over fibre optic cables and using Cisco`s latest 7600 optical switch routers supporting multi protocol label switching, the IP backbone will have more than 130 points of presence in more than 90 cities.
Once the backbone is in place, Telkom will phase in its dial-up Internet, VOIP and broadband access services in each city over the next five years.
Datacraft Indonesia GM Handy Wirawan says the project`s success will strengthen Datacraft`s position in the region`s Internet infrastructure industry.
"It also serves as an excellent showcase of our ability to craft turnkey solutions and meet customers` requirement for a wide range of value-added applications and services, including business and operational support systems, project management expertise and technology training services."
The company says the IP backbone infrastructure will enable Telkom to offer voice and data services with point-to-point bandwidth guarantees.
Telkom also commissioned Datacraft to implement its iBOSS suite of fault and performance management systems to enable the telecom company to monitor and manage its backbone network.
The network operations centre for Telkom`s new national backbone will be developed by Datacraft on a build, operate and transfer basis as part of a broad programme of training and skills transfer.
