Dell boost RMB`s storage capability

Johannesburg, 11 Jul 2001

Rand Merchant Bank`s (RMB) boosted its storage infrastructure with the decision to incorporate Dell servers and storage products at its operations nationwide. RMB also selected Dell`s tape library to back up specified aspects of the bank`s processes as well as information.

Alberto da Silva, systems administrator at RMB, says Dell offered cost-effective products that included a vital after-sale support structure. "The Dell offering satisfied our cost, quality and service demands." RMB has selected Dell`s PowerEdge 2400, the PowerVault 650F and Dell`s 130T-tape library for use within the bank. Leigh Hancock, product-marketing manager at Dell, says the PowerEdge 2400 ensures constant availability to computing systems. "This server`s chipset technology and increased features help keep RMB up and running at peak efficiency, while supporting the company`s future technology growth path."

Hancock adds that the Dell sales model allows Dell to make the latest technology available to its clients, as they request it. "Another benefit of this process is the fact that we do not stock outdated products that have to be sold before we are able to offer the latest processor or chipset."

Da Silva agrees: "Dell is often first to market with new technology, something that is made possible by their sales model and lack of old inventory. For example, the PowerEdge 2400 was one of the first servers to offer 133MHz FSB, roughly three months before any of the other manufacturers."

Performance is a critical factor in the RMB computing environment. Comments Da Silva: "With computers critical to our operations, the fact of the matter is that these solutions and products will either enhance or inhibit our service to clients. Dell offers good support on its products, ensuring that downtime is minimised, thus correlating with the performance that our business demands."
