Dell breaks 2.0GHz performance barrier in three mobile computer lines

Johannesburg, 10 Jul 2002

Dell has closed the performance gap between desktop and notebook computers, announcing worldwide availability of its three portable computer lines with processors running at up to 2.0GHz.

Dell is now offering Intel`s Mobile Pentium 4-M processor at 2.0GHz in its Inspiron 8200, Latitude C840 notebook computers and Dell Precision M50 mobile workstations. The new systems are designed for customers who require the most performance in a mobile computer, whether it is for editing, viewing and storing home digital movies or for compiling geographic data and global positioning systems coordinates for offshore petroleum facilities.

"These are incredibly powerful, highly mobile computers that should be viewed beyond speeds and feeds," says Ben McDonald, product marketing manager at Dell SA. "Our customers trust us to deliver the right combination of relevant leading-edge technologies and convert them into highly usable mobile solutions to best serve their needs."

In addition to the powerful mobile processors, all Dell desktop replacement notebooks and mobile workstations feature:

* Large 15-inch high-resolution displays suited for aficionados of high-end video games, engineers presenting schematics around a conference table or students watching a DVD movie in a dorm room.

* A selection of fast optical drives, including CD-RW drives and CD-RW/DVD combination drives (the fastest available for notebooks). The drives enable quick transfer or back up of large files, like digital photos and videos, MP3s and populated spreadsheets and databases.

* An array of ports including IEEE 1394, frequently used for fast transfer of large files like digital video, S-Video out with S-PDIF audio out to allow for the viewing of DVDs or presentations on televisions. Others are two USB ports that allow for easy connections to a variety of peripherals such as scanners and USB miniature storage devices.

* Fully integrated communications, enabling easy connectivity most anywhere via modem, Ethernet or optional internal 802.11b mini-PCI wireless card. Inspiron 8200 notebooks are designed for home users and small businesses requiring optimum performance for their investment.

Inspiron 8200 series configurations with the new 2GHz processor begin at R26 500.

This 8200 configuration includes a 2GHz processor, 20GB hard disk drive, 128MB DDR memory, NVIDIA GeForce 2 Go 32MB graphics solution, CD-ROM drive and Microsoft Windows XP Pro.

Wireless-ready Latitude C840 notebooks provide powerful performance, portability and flexibility. Common peripheral modules and docking solutions help lower the total cost of ownership. Latitude C840 series configurations with the 2.0GHz processor begin at R31 900.

Dell Precision mobile workstations are designed for professionals who require exceptional performance and certification in the digital content creation, engineering, computer-aided design, geographic information systems, computer animation and software development applications.

Pricing for the Dell Precision M50 mobile workstation with the 2.0GHz processor begins at R44 990. This configuration includes the NVIDIA Quadro 4 500 Go GL graphics processing unit with 64MB DDR graphics memory, 256MB DDR system memory, integrated IEEE 1394, a 40GB high performance ATA-100 IDE hard drive (5400 RPM), CD-ROM and Microsoft Windows XP Pro.
