Dell South Africa has announced the availability of its smallest OptiPlex desktop computer to date, the OptiPlex GX150 SF. According to Leigh Hancock, Dell SA product marketing manager, this machine is built with both IT professionals and end users in mind.
"The GX150 SF enables easy and flexible computing for corporate customers who want maximum productivity and serviceability in a space-saving desktop, while also providing a perfect fit for the home user," he says.
Although its dimensions of 90 mm (H) x 319 mm (W) x 354 mm (D), mark it as one of the smallest desktop footprints in the industry, its chassis can support monitors weighing up to 68 kgs and can be used horizontally or towered, according to Hancock.
This latest addition to the OptiPlex family features a compact OptiFrame chassis as well as LegacySelect Technology Control software, to help corporate and institutional IT departments cost-effectively transition enterprise desktop computers into legacy-reduced environments.
"This machine provides businesses with the ability to deploy desktops tuned to their specific needs, without forking out huge amounts of cash," says Hancock. "With LegacySelect, our customers can choose the amount of expandability they require within one flexible system."
LegacySelect allows IT managers to electronically activate or deactivate any combination of parallel or serial ports, PS/2 mouse and media devices to provide the required balance of functionality and IT control. The system board of the OptiPlex GX150 SF is common with the OptiPlex GX150 SD, giving businesses the flexibility to deploy a single system as a traditional mainstream (legacy-full) corporate PC, or as a legacy-reduced or legacy-free system.
"This also helps companies manage the total cost of ownership of their computing environment by enabling them to standardise on a consistent hardware and software platform, with a common hard drive image and common helpdesk procedures," says Hancock.
The OptiPlex GX150 SF is the second OptiPlex in the new OptiFrame chassis family, featuring a tool-less, clamshell design. It is designed to support future technologies for several years as well as to make component installation, replacement, and upgrades fast and easy. Like the OptiPlex GX150 small desktop (SD), it also features the new industrial design in midnight grey with matching peripherals, including keyboards; mouse; CRT monitors and flat panel displays.
The OptiPlex GX150 SF is the only small form-factor desktop offered by major computer manufacturers that supports a PCI and an AGP graphics card slot so customers seeking easier, smaller PCs can still customise their systems with their choice of AGP graphics cards and PCI-based peripherals.
"This desktop also features front accessible USB and headphone connectors, and its advanced industrial design results in significantly lower noise levels than previous OptiPlex systems," adds Hancock.
Prices start at R 8990-00, excluding VAT and delivery, for an OptiPlex GX150 SF that includes an Intel Pentium III processor at 800 MHz, 128 MB PC133 SDRAM, 10 GB hard disk drive, integrated 10/100 networking, Intel 3D graphics with Direct Accelerated Graphics Port technology and integrated audio, and 1.44 MB floppy disk drive and a 15" Dell monitor. For a similarly configured system with an Intel Celeron processor at 600 MHz, prices start at R 7840-00, excluding VAT and delivery.
