Dell goes smaller

Dell has previewed what the company calls "the company's smallest and most environmentally-responsible consumer desktop PC," states Smarthouse.

The small desktop is apparently 81% smaller and uses up to 70% less energy than a typical desktop mini-tower, according to the company.

However, there was no comment on hardware specifications, brand name or pricing - details Dells says will be released later this year when the desktop is rolled out.

Small vendors will suffer

A shortage of batteries and other components could hurt smaller PC vendors, although the top 10 vendors are also likely to be affected, says NetworkWorld.

Quanta Computer forecasts that the supply of lithium-ion batteries for laptop PCs will remain strained for the next few months, following a fire at a battery factory belonging to South Korea's LG Chem in March.

Production at the affected factory is set to begin again in a few months.

Quanta aims higher

Quanta Computer raised its shipment target for this year to over 40 million laptop PCs, citing a clearer view of demand, says PCWorld.

The Taiwanese company shipped 32 million notebooks last year, and in October forecast that shipments for 2008 would rise to around 36 million.

The revision is a sign of strong demand worldwide. Quanta manufactures notebook PCs on behalf of nearly all major vendors, including Hewlett-Packard and Dell.
