Dell launches wireless computing solution for businesses

Dell South Africa has announced the availability of TrueMobile local area products for its range of Latitude notebooks, aimed at businesses in Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA).

Dell`s TrueMobile 1150 Series solutions offer business users the flexibility to stay connected to their corporate wherever they are in the office, allowing access to real-time information - such as e-mail and the Internet - without the need to be "physically" wired to the network.

"Corporations today operate in increasingly dynamic and fast-paced environments where having access on the spot is a competitive advantage," says Leigh Hancock, product marketing manager for Dell SA. "A wireless network is not only quick to install, but can also show a faster return on investment and lower cost of ownership by reducing re-wiring or cabling costs when business needs evolve and there is a need to re-organise. "With the potential gains in employee productivity and responsiveness that TrueMobile wireless computing can bring, we anticipate it will appeal as a flexible networking enhancement to all types of businesses."

Hancock adds that Dell installs all the drivers and utilities so the systems arrive ready for use. "The product includes software for a wide range of diagnostic capabilities for roaming, power management, signal strength monitoring, as well as 64 bit WEP (Wired Equivalent Privacy) and 128 bit RC4 encryption."

Wireless LAN networks can be configured in a variety of topologies to meet the needs of specific applications and installations. Configurations can be easily changed and range from independent networks for a small number of users to full infrastructure networks of thousands of users allowing roaming over a broad area.

The Dell TrueMobile wireless LAN uses the 11 MB p/s 802.11b wireless standard. It comprises a PC card wireless LAN adapter (TrueMobile 1150 Series PC card - compatible with all current Latitude notebooks); and an access point device (TrueMobile 1150 Series AP1000) that connect to networks for sending and receiving wireless data.

In addition, the TrueMobile 1150 series mini PCI card comes as a fully integrated option on Dell`s Latitude C600 and C800 models - which have built-in antennae connected to the mini PCI slot. "These models are designed to enable integrated 802.11b wireless local area networking, and also operate with the TrueMobile 1150 Series AP1000," says Hancock.
