Dell networked storage systems increase investment protection, ease management for customers

Company introduces storage ATA enclosure, software enhancements for Dell | EMC SAN products
Johannesburg, 17 Mar 2003

Customers can today add a new advanced technology attachment (ATA) enclosure to their Dell/EMC storage arrays to improve access to data that was previously kept on secondary storage systems.

In addition, Dell will offer new storage software enhancements from EMC to help customers better manage and protect their data.

The Dell/EMC ATA enclosure leverages the Fibre Channel architecture to maintain high availability and integrated connectivity with existing Dell/EMC storage systems and software. Customers now have the flexibility to mix and match low cost, high capacity ATA storage with high performance Fibre Channel drives within the storage area network (SAN). This alternative enables administrators to leverage existing secondary storage such as tape systems for archival purposes, and use ATA drives to keep frequently accessed data online.

The new storage enclosure provides a cost-effective solution for applications such as data replication, backup-to-disk and lifecycle data management. For this environment, customers can also add products such as PowerVault tape library systems with super digital linear tape 320 drives for increased data protection.

Protecting information, easing management

New software available worldwide from Dell includes EMC SAN Copy and EMC Replication Manager. SAN Copy allows customers to migrate and distribute data between multiple arrays for load balancing, data migration and protection against data corruption. Replication Manager gives IT personnel an easy-to-use interface for managing the entire information replication process to accelerate the creation of duplicate file system images.

Organisations can use their existing Dell/EMC management tools with the new enclosure and software, including Navisphere, VisualSAN and Control Center, to further reduce costs. Dell/EMC software tools are part of Dell`s Intelligent IT management strategy to provide simple and automated systems management.

"Customers every day tell us they need enterprise systems that provide the flexibility to manage increasing amounts of data at the lowest possible cost," said Tony Bogatie, Enterprise Group Systems Director of Dell South Africa. "With EMC, we will continue to introduce new storage options that allow customers to leverage their existing investments while addressing the growing need to provide uninterrupted access to information."

Availability

The Dell/EMC ATA enclosure can accommodate up to 15 250GB drives and is available immediately for Dell/EMC CX400 and CX600 systems. The new software features are available for both Dell/EMC CX systems and previous generation storage arrays with prices varying according to deployment. Dell also offers installation, training and support services as customers design and deploy their SAN.
