Dell, Oracle tie up on cluster push
Dell and Oracle have announced they will work together more closely to push adoption of storage and server clusters running open source software as a low-cost alternative to more powerful enterprise machines, reports NewsFactor.
The companies will expand an existing partnership to include a worldwide sales agreement and deployment of clusters of Dell`s PowerEdge servers running Oracle9i database platforms. The companies will also jointly service the systems.
The clusters will sell for $18 000 and run either Red Hat Linux or Microsoft Windows.
Sun, SAP mix Java
Sun Microsystems and SAP have established a joint Java Technology Centre at SAP`s headquarters in Walldorf, Germany.
The centre`s charter is to assess, promote and optimise Java technology for adoption in the SAP NetWeaver services-oriented technology platform for all SAP solutions.
"SAP is delivering on its commitment of an open, standards-based technology architecture. We consider Java to be a core component of our strategy because of the momentum the Java community has in shaping a standard platform for e-business applications," says Stephan Rossius, senior VP of global partner management, SAP AG.
HP pushes DVD on value PCs
Hewlett-Packard has announced a new line of Pavilion notebooks and desktop PCs, using them as a showcase for the company`s DVD burners. Extremetech.com reports that HP is introducing its DVD burners into the value PC space. Most of the desktops` standard configurations cost less than $1 000.
Although consumers might not think of using a notebook computer to edit video, the site reveals that reporters in the field in Iraq often edit their own reports.
