Dell SA has announced its new-look Latitude notebook line, featuring contemporary styling and built-in wireless capability. The lightweight Latitude C600 is currently available, while the Latitude C800 is scheduled to be available within 60 days.
The Latitude C600 and C800 have a refined style that establishes a common look for these and future Latitude notebook PCs. "The new design retains forward and backward compatibility with all Latitude C-family docking solutions, batteries, AC adapters and media modules shipped since November 1997," explains Leigh Hancock, product marketing manager at Dell SA.
"This strategy helps lower the cost of ownership for customers and has helped fuel Dell`s growth in portable shipments to the number one position in medium and large business worldwide and number three in Europe, the Middle East and Africa."
Both new Latitude models include built-in antennae, which are connected to the Mini PCI slot and are designed to enable integrated 802.11b wireless local area networking. Hancock says this helps customers stay connected to the Internet and e-mail away from the desk, via a wireless network. The Latitude C600 is 35.5mm thick with a starting weight of 2.4kg. It is lighter than the Latitude CPx and offers a choice of processors including the Intel Pentium III 850MHz processor with SpeedStep technology.
A typical Pentium III 700MHz processor configuration includes the Dell DualPoint integrated pointing device, which gives users the choice of using either a touch pad, or a track stick as a pointing mechanism. It further offers 64 MB RAM (upgradable to 512MB); a choice of 6.0GB, 10GB or 20GB hard disk drives; floppy disk drive and 24X-maximum CD-ROM drive; optional integrated 56K v.90 modem; enhanced video sub-system including Accelerated Graphics Port (AGP) and 8MB SGRAM.
The C800 is the first Latitude with a 15-inch SXGA+ screen and represents the top-end of the performance category. It can be easily configured using any two of the following as the fixed optical drive: CD-ROM, DVD or CD-RW, allowing, for example, the simultaneous use of a CD-ROM and a CD-RW drive.
"The combination of high-speed wireless connectivity, robust graphics capability and an IEEE 1394 port - useful for attaching digital cameras and other video devices to the computer - makes the C800 ideal for graphic illustrators, designers, database developers, or Web site builders. Actually anyone that requires mobility and constant access to the Internet or a company`s intranet infrastructure will find this machine a useful tool," concludes Hancock.
