Dell SA has donated a Dell OptiPlex GX 50 desktop computer to the Bellavista Cr`eche, which caters for underprivileged children. According to Excel Shikwane, Executive Corporate Affairs at Dell SA, the company firmly believes in uplifting and equipping the youth of SA.
"This cr`eche and afterschool facility caters for the needs of the children from the Bellavista community. " he says.
As a charity organisation, the Bellavista Cr`eche is mostly dependent on donations to provide for the children in their care. Lydia Viljoen, sole proprietor and principal of the Bellavista Cr`eche, says the parents of these children are facing financial difficulties. "The reality is that most of our parents are employed at low paying jobs, meaning that they are often left with a tough choice between paying school fees and simply putting bread on the table.
"That is why we rely on the goodwill of corporates such as Dell, because on our own we are unable to completely meet the needs of these children," adds Viljoen.
The Dell OptiPlex GX 50 is to be used for computer literacy projects as well as school assignments. Viljoen says they hope to send computer literate youngsters to school this year, with the aid of this donation. "We will also use it for administrative tasks. These days it is vital to have access to a computer. The Internet is a tool not only for educating the kids but also for ensuring that they are fed and clothed, as we can use the Internet to locate sponsors."
Shikwane maintains that the children of the Bellavista community are given crucial educational opportunities at Bellavista Cr`eche. "The cr`eche is able to both protect and educate these children, and we believe that they deserve this."
