Dell technology boosts education

Dell South Africa has affirmed its commitment to computer literacy by sponsoring 10 desktops destined for a historically disadvantaged school in the Free State.

Oziel Selele Comprehensive School received the Dell desktops as the first leg of an initiative headed by the South African Minister of Defence, minister Lekota. With this project he aims to provide both urban and rural pupils with equal opportunities in the field of information and technology.

"Having grown up in a rural community, I realise that what might seem like a small contribution to an organisation, can make a big difference to needy students. One PC can allow children to be part of the global village and take up their position as citizens of the new world, forever altering the course of their lives," says Lekota.

Kusasa Technologies partnered with Dell for this initiative. Charlemagne Chimbangu, MD of Kusasa Technologies, says his company is financing and loading on the donated systems. "With Dell providing the desktops, we loaded Windows 98 onto the machines and installed them at the schools."

"It is of critical importance that our children are computer literate at an early stage, so as to enable them to be effectively competitive during their academic years and as they enter the local and global knowledge-based economies," continues Chimbangu. It is in light of this that Kusasa Technologies has pledged to provide free computer training to students at Oziel Selele Comprehensive School.

Dell South Africa MD, Gareth Martin, says is something that Dell considers a priority. "Dell is committed to ensuring that the youth of South Africa is provided the opportunity to obtain the skills that will ensure their future as part of the economy."
