"I do not believe that we have ever experienced such interest in a single product. We commenced deliveries of the Nokia 7110 at the end of last year and since then demand has been far greater than the supply", says Mike Myers, Managing Director of the RF Group, importers of Nokia Mobile Phones to Southern Africa.
Many large corporations approached Nokia to announce that they wanted to shift all existing mobile phones to WAP based models. Many retailers have long waiting lists for customers. Both networks and all the service providers report a very strong awareness of the product, which is unusual bearing in mind the fact that it has recently been launched and that Nokia is withholding major advertising, and publicity launches on the phone because of the current shortage of supply.
"Nokia`s WAP phone was first on the market", states Myers.
Finland based Nokia is the world`s leading mobile phone manufacturer and became Europe`s largest company measured in terms of market capitalisation. WAP technology provides users with wireless access to the Internet and provides services such as electronic mail, remote banking and access to database information.
"Nokia`s vision is that the mobile phone will become the primary means to communicate over the Internet in the not too distant future", says Myers.
The Nokia 7110 is the world`s first media phone for Internet access that is based on the Wireless Application Protocol (WAP). This new product has been designed to enable easy access to Internet content from a mobile phone. The Nokia 7110 has a large graphics display and a number of new and innovative features for ease of operation and text input.
Nokia Mobile Phones are imported and distributed by the RF Group in South Africa. The RF Group is one of the largest suppliers of cellular phones and accessories in the country.
