The purchase of Light Emitting Diode (LED) TVs is becoming increasingly popular among energy-conscious consumers in SA.

This is according to Justin Shaw, business leader for visual display at Samsung, who attributes this to the fact that LED TVs benefit from drastically reduced power consumption.

According to Shaw, the demand for TV sets that feature LED backlit technology is increasing every quarter with people starting to view this as a default buying option.

On average, an LED circuit only loses 20% of electrical energy as heat, as opposed to older incandescent technology, which uses 80%, he says, adding that consumers need to keep in mind not only the importance of energy saving but that of cost as well.

"LED displays use the least energy of any flat-panel technology, and as a result, LED TVs are fast becoming first choice for energy-cautious consumers," notes Shaw.

Samsung recently signed the 49M pledge, an initiative that aims to inspire and rally all South Africans behind a common goal of saving electricity, committing the brand to energy efficiency through its product line and internal processes.

This commitment, according to Shaw, is part of encouraging a national culture of energy saving for a sustainable future.

"Developing LED technology within the TV and lighting businesses becomes even more critical in this landscape then and it is here that we are continuing to drive our commitment," he adds.

"So if you are going to invest in a new TV, choosing an LED TV will provide you with not only the best picture image, but will ensure you maintain the best possible energy efficiency without any additional effort."
