Device Scanner helps prevent data being stolen

Johannesburg, 15 Jul 2009

Network security expert, AfricaSD, has made a free trial of Lumension's remote device scanning software available via its Web site.

Sanctuary Device Control helps enforce removable device usage policies and identify potential security breaches by scanning the network and providing detailed, real-time reports on remote device and media usage.

Data theft and loss through removable device and media is soaring, perhaps partly because it is so easy to execute and partly because employees plug in compromised devices carrying viruses, Trojans or spyware unintentionally.

A staggering 10% of respondents to a survey conducted by a leading US market research company indicated that they had either intentionally stolen data from their company or knew someone who had, and that, in many cases, this information was sold on for a profit.

Lumension's Sanctuary Device Control tackles this vulnerability by automating the enforcement of data and device usage policies across the entire network and enforcing encryption policies when sensitive data is copied to removable devices.

“The Device Scanner enables firms to establish precisely how vulnerable they are to this growing threat,” confirms Hennie Moolman, Managing Director of AfricaSD. “The Device Scanner not only reveals what remote devices are being used and whether they are authorised to access the system, it even reports on what specific devices are being used to do.”

By employing a 'whitelist' approach, Sanctuary Device Control enables only authorised devices to connect to a network, laptop, thin client or desktop. If the device is known, the Device Control driver checks the user rights in the Access Control List (ACL). If a user has access rights to a device, either Read or Read/Write access is granted. If a user does not have access rights to the device, a customisable “Access Denied” notification alerts the user.

As well as providing detailed device and activity reports - including what is being read from or written to the device or media - Sanctuary Device Control enables an administrator to quickly identify devices and assign permissions in a variety of ways, including by device class, specific device or specific media to user(s)/user group(s) or to a specific computer.

Administration of access rights is accomplished centrally through a simple “tree-style” interface and device policies are linked to user and user-group data stored in Active Directory or eDirectory, dramatically simplifying the management of endpoint device resources.

“The free trial version is not the full product, but will discover and report on all the different devices that are, or have been, connected to the network,” notes Moolman, “making the client aware of all potential vulnerabilities.”
