Digital delivers next level of SCSI performance

Johannesburg, 13 Mar 1998

Digital Equipment Corporation has announced a range of products for the storage OEM market that deliver greater performance and increased capacity. The announcement includes a new Ultra SCSI RAID subsystem and controller, an enhanced version of the Enterprise Storage Manager (ESM) configuration and monitoring tool, and a new Digital Linear Tape(DLT) drive. The products are designed to meet the growing storage demands of OEM customers, especially for applications such as data warehousing, video-on-demand, imaging and the Internet. Based on technology developed by Digital, the new Ultra SCSI RAID products give OEMs two-and-a-half times the performance of previous SCSI-2 products, increased capacity of up to 650 Gigabytes, and far greater configuration flexibility. The StorageWorks HA-2450CU subsystem provides virtual fault tolerance through redundant power controllers, cooling, and mirrored cache with RAID levels 0, 1, 0+1, and Digital`s Adaptive RAID 3/5. The new Ultra SCSI SC-5650 RAID controller, the heart of the RAID subsystem, provides high performance and high availability access to Ultra SCSI devices from host computer systems. "Digital is bringing the scalable StorageWorks for OEMs family to the next level with Ultra SCSI products that offer more speed and flexibility," said Julian Simpkins, storage product manager at Digital Equipment Corporation SA. "Because Ultra SCSI was designed to co-exist with earlier versions of SCSI products, Digital is offering a smooth upgrade path for current storage solutions so OEMs can deploy Ultra SCSI storage simply and inexpensively." The modular Ultra SCSI RAID Array subsystem includes a single cabinet backplane that eliminates the need for cabling between devices and shelves, as well as industry-standard Ultra SCSI host and device interfaces. The Ultra SCSI StorageWorks HA-2450CU subsystem and SC-5650 RAID controller are available in a RAID array or rackmount version. Evaluation units are now shipping to OEM customers worldwide. Digital`s Enterprise Storage Manager (ESM), a graphical user interface and remote management program, allows OEM customers to monitor, configure, and troubleshoot StorageWorks RAID subsystems based on the SC-series of controllers from a single Windows NT-based station. OEM customers can configure and monitor their storage subsystems easily from anywhere on a network. If their networks have Internet connectivity, they can manage storage subsystems over TCP/IP from anywhere in the world. ESM software runs on the Windows `95 and Windows NT operating systems, and can manage storage subsystems on Windows `95, Windows NT, Sun Solaris, SCO UNIXWARE, IBM AIX, HP-UX, and Silicon Graphics IRIX host systems. Digital Linear Tape (DLT) drives, originally designed for backing up data from demanding data centre applications, have become increasingly popular for use in client/server environments because of their low cost and ease of use. Digital`s new StorageWorks DLT7000 tape drive offers OEM customers 70 percent more performance than previous models with transfer rates of 10 MB/second. The drive, which provides up to 70 Gigabytes of capacity in a 5.25-inch form factor, is affordable, reliable and easy to install.
