Digital Equipment Corporation is making it easier for enterprise customers to manage mission-critical data in mixed-vendor computing environments with enhancements to its version of NetWorker, based on storage management software developed by Legato System.
The announcement includes:
- DIGITAL NetWorker for Windows NT, version 5.1, for Digital`s Alpha and Intel platforms, which allows customers to back up distributed storage easily from a storage node. A storage node, a client with storage devices attached, off-loads the main server during large transfers of data to secondary storage used for backup, and eliminates network bottlenecks. When running on an AlphaServer system, the software can back up more than 550 gigabytes of data per hour - the fastest on the market for Windows NT. This new software also sets a record with a 73 percent increase in data transfer rates for recover operations. With this release, customers can recover data almost as fast as they can back it up, decreasing the waiting time for restoring data so applications can be restarted faster.
- Enhancements to DIGITAL NetWorker server software for the DIGITAL UNIX operating system that enable highly available backup operations in clustered environments. When a NetWorker server becomes unavailable, storage management is relocated to another server in the cluster. DIGITAL NetWorker client software that allows users to back up mission-critical data stored on Digital`s OpenVMS operating system over a network, therefore consolidating backup operations in mixed-vendor computing environments.
- New database modules for DIGITAL NetWorker that provide continuous access to information stored on leading database software during backup operations so users can be productive around the clock. The database modules include Microsoft Exchange Server and SQL Server, Informix, Oracle and SAP R/3 for Oracle for Windows NT-based Intel platforms; and Informix running on DIGITAL UNIX platforms.
"High availability and performance have always been key requirements for customers running large, mission-critical applications," said Julian Simpkins, storage products manager at Digital Equipment Corporation, SA. "Because of the tremendous amount of data now stored throughout an enterprise, high availability and high performance have become important for backup and disaster recovery solutions. Working with Legato Systems, Digital offers superior disaster-tolerant solutions for its customers` IT environments on the broadest range of platforms in the industry."
