Digital Geekaship: a new way of studying software engineering

Midrand, 31 Jul 2017

"The South African economy and education system has been under pressure for a few years now. The 2017 negative GDP growth rate has caused South Africa to enter yet another recession. There is a shortage of available technology professionals in the country, causing work to be outsourced to other countries, while our own youth are desperate for job opportunities. The youth are further demanding for the cost of education to come down in order to give them a chance at getting a proper education and a chance to change their own destiny," says Tania van Wyk de Vries.

"In response to this 'crisis' we looked at how we could assist South Africa to get access to skilled technology professionals quickly, while accelerating students' access to a career and lowering the cost of education to get there. In doing so they could start earning a solid income after only eight to 12 months", indicates Tania van Wyk de Vries.

Digital Geekaship's short course programmes aim to address this with registrations opening on 1 August 2017 for October 2017 intake for the Midrand Campus.

All short courses offered by the Digital Geekaship are a mentor-led, work-integrated, blended learning approach to teach students how to become hotshot software engineers and -crafts(wo)man.

Each short course is broken down into weekly modules to facilitate structured learning. Experienced software engineers act as Digital Geekaship mentors who introduce content to students at the Digital Geekaship campus, where after students get to work immediately on the week's focus areas. Each module comprises some theory as well as a practical assessment, which is evaluated by the Digital Geekaship mentors. After only two and a half months of studying at the Digital Geekaship, students start working on actual commercial projects to gain sought-after practical work experience while furthering their studies on a weekly basis.

"We believe this is the future of education and not just for the technology industry. By using this approach to learning combined with working, we calculated that our software engineers have been able to increase their earning potential by an average of 488%. A student with only 18 months of work experience gained within the Digital Geekaship could easily deliver at the same level as someone with five years' organic growth work experience elsewhere," says Tania van Wyk de Vries.

The Digital Geekaship October 2017 in-take is focused on its software engineering short courses.

It is time that we raise the level of education in South Africa and take responsibility as corporates to ensure we educate our youth through quality, value-added training and qualification offered by people who are qualified and practicing it on a daily basis.
