Xerox expertise shaves 60-80 percent off print turnaround time

Xerox has merged Nissan`s traditional offset and laser printing departments into a single new integrated system. Nissan called in Xerox to increase its printing efficiency, reduce costs and waste.

Xerox analysed the motor company`s document requirements and designed and customised a company-specific digital print solution - a Xerox DocuTech 6180 with DigiPath, Solimar and Paris system.

Although work is still in progress the new Xerox digital system is already saving Nissan between 60-80 percent in print turnaround time and has brought its print production down from ten steps with its previous process, to three.

The Xerox digital system prints manuals, booklets, training materials and all company stationery - more than a million pages each month.

As the digital system prints on-demand, Nissan is able to substantially reduce its stockholding and so save money. Ultimately the system will be able to provide personalised and customised vehicle manuals for first and second-hand car buyers.

The first black-and-white and single-colour phases of the system are installed and operating smoothly. The second, full-colour phase is to be implemented shortly.

The digital system will provide a central print facility for the whole of Nissan South Africa. Nissan intends to outsource excess print capacity.

De Gama Malabi of Nissan SA said:

"Nissan SA had two printing departments, one for computer generated print-outs, the other for traditional offset. I had a vision of consolidating both areas into a single operation. I approached Xerox to investigate how to make this vision real. Traditional offset printing is done during the day and the computer printing is done mainly during the night. This project proves there is no need to print in bulk and carry the stock. Print on demand does work - ask me!"
