The perceived growth in chances of a major bioterrorist attack has led Dimension to release a health network portal that allows a broad range of US local and state governments to collaborate and alert one another of potential threats.

The portal links medical teams to public health officials. The system is apparently designed to alert users to unusual disease outbreaks and "bioterrorist" activity, and share diagnostic and treatment information as quickly as possible. Others that had a hand in the early warning system are HP, Intel and Microsoft.

RedHat guns for the desktop

Linux giant RedHat is eyeing the desktop market and says a business-oriented desktop version of its distribution is on the cards for next year. The company says business users are frustrated with Microsoft`s dominance of this market and the demand for alternatives is growing. The new range is likely going to be distributed on a subscription basis.

RedHat president Matthew Szulik says most of the "components are there for us to pursue a desktop strategy", including the Mozilla browser and the Nautilus file system. "There is a robust set of infrastructure tools and technologies that will make a desktop credible."

High-speed blade

The Motorola Computer Group yesterday announced a high-speed processor blade that includes a 1.2GHz processor and up to 2GB of 266MHz double data rate SDRAM. The Pentium-III-M based CompactPCI boards feature a PCI-X internal bus for on-board communication and support for the company`s high availability software for Linux. HotSwap support should also make the board a useful addition to any server room.
