Discdefender, a US-based company, now has representation in SA and is distributing its CDfender and DVDfender products.

The products are now being sold through 94 resellers countrywide since the release last August, says Braam Snyman, director of Zebra Holdings, which distributes Discdefender products locally.

Both products are being sold through specialist stores like Intercomputers, which has 20 branches in the country, Music Obsession, Top CD, Super CD and online at Planet.

The CDfender product is a patented clear polycarbonate film that is designed to protect the playing surface of CDs from damage while allowing the laser to read through it, the company says.

DVDfender uses optically clear film that mimics the optical qualities of the DVD, according to a company statement.

Similar products include ForceField, which uses a polymer layer to protect the disk, and D-Skin, which envelops the entire disk.

PC Gameworld in Sandton City, Johannesburg, was the first outlet to the products following the release last year, and manager Hugh MacCabe says the interest in the products is high.

Negotiations with a South African company to manufacture the product locally are in progress, says Snyman, which should see the costs reduced.

The Dfender products were released in the US last year after six years of research and development in the UK, Germany and US, with the assistance of Philips Electronics and EMI.
