An e-mail circulating among cellphone users has called for a boycott of the use of cellphones for 24 hours from 7am this morning.
The e-mail asks users to boycott the cellular networks, which it claims are some of the most profitable in the world, while users continue to receive poor service and rate increases.
The anonymous author hopes the boycott will make the networks sit up and take notice. "Let`s show the cellular networks and manufacturers they need their 24 million customers more than we need them," reads the e-mail. "Spread the word to everyone by e-mail or word of mouth, not SMS!"
However, the campaign seems to have had low circulation, with MTN saying in a statement that it had not received a formal notice of the boycott.
Both MTN and Vodacom have responded to the campaign by denying that service increases are exorbitant and pointing out that tariffs are subject to approval by the Independent Communications Authority of SA.
