Ahead of the much-anticipated local launch of Disney+, MultiChoice announced today that the streaming service will be available to its South African DStv subscribers.

Set to launch in SA on 18 May, the global streaming service will be available to DStv subscribers via the Explora Ultra decoder on the same day, says MultiChoice.

In a statement, the pay-TV giant notes customers with connected Explora Ultra decoders will be able to access all their entertainment needs in one central place, bundle deals and limited launch offers.

Christine Service, senior vice-president and general manager of The Walt Disney Company Africa, says: “This is yet another proud milestone in our partnership with the MultiChoice Group. We are delighted to be collaborating to bring South African DStv subscribers access to Disney+’s incredible catalogue of films, series and exclusive content.”

The Disney+ partnership isn’t a first for MultiChoice, which has had to come up with innovative ways to retain customers by allowing them to access third-party streaming services via its DStv platform.

In 2020, MultiChoice announced partnerships with Netflix and Amazon Prime Video, to make the offerings accessible through its DStv Explora Ultra decoder.

MultiChoice states it’s continuously innovating to enhance the viewing experience for its customers to bring them the best in local and international content.

“In line with our business objective of adding value and enhancing our ecosystem, we are focused on making sure all our customers can enjoy their favourite shows and movies anywhere, anytime, on our world-class platforms,” comments Calvo Mawela, group CEO of MultiChoice.

“The digital world has brought with it fundamental shifts and our customers are looking for convenient access to a portfolio of entertainment options. MultiChoice’s partnership with Disney+ leads with an expanded choice of content, ease and convenience of subscription and payment, with the DStv Explora Ultra as an enabler.”

According to MultiChoice, its DStv subscribers will have access to a number of Disney+ movie titles, including The Book of Boba Fett and The Mandalorian; Marvel Studios’ series Moon Knight, Shang-Chi and the Legend of The Ten Rings; Disney and Pixar’s Luca; as well as Walt Disney Animation Studios’ Encanto and Cruella.

Subscribers will also be able to watch titles such as The Simpsons, Queens and The Kardashians.
