Nominations for the replacement of four board directors at the .ZA Domain Name Authority (.ZADNA) have closed, with minister of communications Siphiwe Nyanda appointing an independent selection panel to review the applicants.
Last month, Nyanda invited the public to nominate candidates for the four available posts, before 30 July. Now with nominations closed, he has enlisted the following panel members to review and appoint the successful applicants: Tebogo Makgatho (chairperson), Professor Maredi Mphahlele, Lefa Mallane, Barbara Lynne Orrock and Professor Roy Marcus.
The independent panel will shortlist nominees, conduct interviews and make recommendations to the minister, who will then appoint the new directors. The new directors will come in as the .ZADNA's policies remain stagnant.
Policy limbo
The authority follows an inclusive policy development process, which includes a public consultation process.
In late 2005, a draft discussion document was released and feedback was used to compile draft .za policies and procedures in 2007. Feedback from the public and stakeholder consultation process was used to draft registrar and registry licensing regulations. These were released for public comment in late 2009.
While the .ZADNA's constitution contains the policy and procedure for new domain applications, for the last four years the authority put a moratorium on accepting new domain applications pending introducing the .za domain policy and the licensing of registries and registrars.
