Doom 3 on its way

Video game publisher Activision and games developer ID Software have announced that the highly anticipated Doom 3 PC game will be released in the quarter ending September.

Fans have awaited the release of the game for years, given the long and successful history of titles like Doom and Quake, reports Reuters.

However, Activision cautioned that final control of the release was out of its hands. In the past, when asked when the game would be out, officials have said only "when it`s done".

Microsoft, EA make peace

Microsoft and Electronic Arts (EA) have put aside long-standing differences over online gaming as EA announced that it would release more than a dozen games this year supporting the Microsoft Xbox Live online game service.

Reuters reports that almost the entire EA line-up of sports games will now support Xbox Live.

The agreement comes on the heels of rising sales for the Xbox game console, which still trails the Sony PlayStation 2.

Sony unveils music player

Sony has introduced its Vaio Pocket digital music player, reports Reuters.

It features a hard drive capable of storing 13 000 songs. The device will be the first portable music player with an embedded hard drive to be sold under the Sony brand name.

However, industry watchers say Sony will struggle to gain a footing in the fast-growing industry now dominated by Apple.

The Vaio Pocket can also connect to a digital camera and display photos on a 2.2-inch colour liquid crystal display screen.
