The security market has proven to be one of the fastest growing sectors in the IT industry. One just need read the recent IT press to understand how many security threats there are. In particular, worms, Trojan horses and other malicious software that execute on computers, exposing corporations, their security and stability of their corporate networks.
"We believe the immediate danger relates to laptops which temporarily, but often, leave the corporate network and attach to networks not controlled by the corporate perimeter firewall," says Ighsaan Akoojee, product manager at Networks Unlimited. "Our research shows that more than 50% of corporate laptops do not have personal firewalls." This is an alarming statistic given the likelihood of infection.
"IDC has recently announced a new category, corporate desktop firewalls and consumer desktop firewalls, which addresses the remarkable growth in desktop firewalls," says Akoojee.
"The truth is, most personal firewalls only monitor traffic in and out of a computer, not the processes running on it. Once a computer has been infected, the firewall is useless. Perimeter firewalls are only designed to shield corporate computers from malicious data coming from the Internet. This is satisfactory if your laptops never leave the office."
The real corporate threat is not that a single laptop gets infected; it is when such a laptop reconnects to the corporate network. "One single contaminated laptop and your entire network could potentially be exposed," says Akoojee.
Thomas Raschke, program manager, European Security Products & Strategies, IDC, comments: "A very serious threat is the fact that more than half of all the security-related incidents that result in quantifiable damage stem from within the firewall, for example as a result of disgruntled employees, careless partners, or other authorised users that either intentionally or unintentionally introduce malicious programs and damage an organisation`s network."
Organisations need solutions that prevent unwanted or dangerous data from entering or leaving a computer. Moreover, only approved programs should be loaded or be allowed to communicate with their network. An ideal situation would be when users cannot override the security policies under which their computer is operating and policies can be immediately enacted and rigidly enforced.
Networks Unlimited provides product solutions in the areas where efficient networking communications is the key to success. Our solutions are focused on providing tangible results to our clients through network management, productivity and security solutions.
