When the Durban Metro Council identified the need to manage its network effectively and efficiently, its first choice for a comprehensive and pervasive solution was Computer Associates` (CA) Unicenter TNG Solution, which enables easy and precise remote administration and management of enterprise resources.
"Basically, Durban Metro was concerned about its network which comprises a huge infrastructure with a plethora of devices," says Mike Hatton-Jones, CA Africa`s global professional services manager, Kwa-Zulu - Natal region.
Hatton-Jones reveals that the Metro project has been implemented in phases, beginning with an auto-discovery on the Metro network to establish exactly what devices and applications were being run. "Once we had identified all the devices on the network, we built Business Process Views for each business unit to establish exactly what is in each unit and to highlight any problems in them. At present, we are in the process of rolling out desktop management and asset management functions. We`re in the beta phase at the moment, but we`re due to go live very shortly," reports Hatton-Jones.
Durban Metro project manager Roney Moodley reveals that the organization opted for the Unicenter solution after a careful examination of available software solutions. "Metro chose Computer Associates software because we are already using CA products with great results. Our investigations also revealed that CA is the choice of most companies in South Africa, so Metro is confident to implement Unicenter as a tried and tested solution," he declares. Metro will be implementing Unicenter`s Helpdesk Management, Desktop and Server and Network Management tools. "With the installation of CA`s remote management tools, Durban Metro will be able to troubleshoot systems, install new software, backup systems and keep systems virus-free all from a centralised location; saving time and money," enthuses Moodley.
The Unicenter TNG Remote Control Option also enables network administrators to perform maintenance and troubleshooting on any server or desktop in the Metro network from a central, remote location. Not only does Unicenter TNG eliminate many of the routine tasks that the IT staff had to perform, but it also automates tasks such as data backup of servers that were formerly the responsibility of Metro personnel.
