E-cycling at green music festivals

Johannesburg, 08 Oct 2010

Nokia SA will extend its 'e-cycling' campaign at this weekend's Rocking the Daisies and Rocking the Gardens music festivals in the Cape and Johannesburg, respectively.

The 'green' festivals are powered by renewables such as wind turbines and biofuels, and incorporate “innovative, environmentally-conscious initiatives... to spread the message of 'play hard, tread lightly',” according to the organisers.

Nokia is sponsoring the festivals, which is also supported by WWF SA and Greenpeace, together with Hemporium, OceanMinded, Food and Trees for Africa, and the Conscious Cinema.

Nokia says it will have a drop-off point at the festivals, where people can bring their old Nokia phones or accessories, of any make or model, and donate them for safe recycling.

Festival goers will be given a recycled billboard leaf to add to the 'We Recycle tree' as a pledge to making a difference to the environment, says Tania Steenkamp, communications manager for Nokia SA.

Nokia says it has committed to plant a tree for every 20 phones or accessories collected Participants will also be sent a certificate with the geotag of exactly where their tree has been planted.

“Nokia's involvement in this type of festival makes perfect sense following our move into music via our Ovi Music and Ovi Music Unlimited offerings which provides a channel for users to digitally access over six million MP3 tracks including a wide variety of South African, African and international artists,” says Steenkamp.

The festivals are to be held this weekend: Rocking the Daisies at Cloof Wine Estate in Darling, Western Cape, and Rocking the Gardens at Emmarentia Dam in Johannesburg. Both will feature South African bands, comedians and artists.
