E-learning alone not enough

Johannesburg, 17 Dec 2003

IT training experts say the blended learning is likely to be the fastest growing training method locally in the coming year in line with international trends identified in a research report published by CompTIA and Thomson Prometric earlier this year.

"There has been a distinct move towards blended learning as the corporate world has realised from experience that e-learning as a training tool will not save money nor meet total training requirements unless it is blended with an instructor-led approach" says Richard Rayne, MD of On-Site Training. "A combination of learning solutions such as e-learning, instructor-led training and group sessions will deliver a far more effective training solution."

Customised training at the client`s premises is also enjoying growth, says Rayne.

"An on-site, personalised training service coupled with a post-training e-learning capability is proving to be the most cost and quality effective and more convenient for companies."

Soft skills cum PC training

Another area enjoying growth according to the research report is the combination of soft business skills training combined with end-user PC training. In what is believed to be an industry first, says Rayne, On-Site Training has introduced a package for clients combining end-user PC training with soft skills development.

"Soft skills are important in any job function. Combining it with technical skills allows the end-user to make the transition from their existing role and to improve by building on sound techniques and principles."

Loraine Vorster, regional director of CompTIA South Africa says the challenge for local training providers is to recognise the changes in the market conditions, the relevance thereof in terms of global and local trends, and to tweak and evolve their training methods to meet market demands.

"CompTIA is first and foremost an ICT Industry Association", says Vorster. "In South Africa we are focused on providing industry specific, independent insight into the local training industry, promoting the value of certification and representing our members in various sectors of the Industry."
