E-mail, IM, browsing, entertainment combined

AOL`s free version of AOL OpenRide is available. It`s an all-in-one program that combines access to e-mail, instant messaging (IM), Web browsing, search, and an entertainment media centre into a single interface optimised for high-speed cable or DSL online users, TMCNET reports.

OpenRide allows users to access their e-mail (including non-AOL accounts), watch videos, listen to music and view photos online. It is based on an open and modular software technology platform.

AOL also plans to add features relating customisation and personalisation to the OpenRide software program.

Morphing pictures

Researchers at Bournemouth University have developed software that changes a photo of a person`s face to create emoticons for IM, says Pocketlint.

The user uploads a neutral-expression photograph, then marks points on it to indicate eyebrows, eyes and mouth. The program then morphs these points to show different emotions, the report says.

The software can recreate happiness, sadness, fear, anger, surprise, and disgust.
